Abstract

The talk aims to focus on a direction of innovation management that has largely been overlooked – how family involvement in a business organization affects innovation. The presentation draws on the intensive research carried out by the author and provides insights that can inform family business owners, managers and decision-makers about how the idiosyncratic characteristics of the family business have an impact on the management and organization of innovation (and entrepreneurial initiatives), and how innovation and entrepreneurial practices should be revised to best suit its distinctive characteristics. Real cases of family firms such as Beretta, Vibram, Aboca and Apremare are also mentioned in order to show the particular challenges and issues of innovation management in family businesses. Finally, the presentation provides research-led insights to scholars with research interests at the crossroads of innovation and family business.
