Abstract

This article discusses Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife, Chris Marker's film La Jetee and Terry Gilliams' 'remake' Twelve Monkeys in terms of the science fiction trope of time travel. The article proposes that the shift from a mechanical means of time travel (Wells's Time Machine) to a biological, genetic or psychological one is diagnostic of a turn towards a pathologised and traumatised masculinity that is increasingly visible in contemporary culture.
