Abstract

Encouraging people to spend locally is a popular strategy for reviving languishing economies. Traditional approaches involve the circulation of alternative local currencies, which often fail for reasons external to the notion of local fiscalism itself. Mobile social networking may provide one mechanism for circumventing these problems by augmenting existing currencies with information relating to their flow within the local economy.
