Abstract

This paper uncovers a previously unknown and substantial marine insurance underwriting centre in Lancaster during the 1780s. The paper is based upon documentary research amongst the papers of entrepreneur Daniel Eccleston (1745-1821) and shows how provincial centres for underwriting and brokering were able to compete effectively with Liverpool, London and Bristol,
