The results of a recent study into the lessons learnt from recent nuclear build projects are described. Six projects have been investigated by means of literature review and interview with expertise on these projects. The results of this research have been analysed in terms of the principal engineering issues that will benefit future new-build nuclear projects in the UK. Five key lessons have emerged including: that follow-on replica projects are cheaper than first-of-a-kind projects; the design must be mature and licensing issues resolved before the start of construction; a highly qualified team must be established to develop the design, secure the safety case and plan the procurement and build schedules in collaboration with the main contractors; subcontractors must be of high quality and experienced in nuclear construction or otherwise taught the necessary skills; good communications with the community local to the site must be established and maintained.
