Abstract

It is the aim of this case study to provide a working example of a Higher Education (HE) business support Project, delivered by Lancaster Product Development Unit (LPDU) within the Engineering Department of Lancaster University. It is intended to demonstrate to external stakeholders the issues and nature of this type of work so that it may be further analysed against criteria set out in the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform’s Business Support Simplification Programme (BSSP). The Government’s Manufacturing Strategy (DTI, 2002) highlights seven pillars for manufacturing success with a key focus on helping “manufacturers to move up the value chain and to reap the benefits of high-skilled, knowledge intensive manufacturing operations”. Since 2002, LPDU demonstrated success in that aim through the achievements of the ERDF funded Lancaster Virtual Prototyping Project (Regional), the Virtual Prototyping Project Phase II (Regional: Transitional Only), Virtual Prototyping Project Phase III (Regional) and the ESF funded Design Innovation Project (National).
