Special Individual Circumstances. Girlpower and Boyhood is an international group exhibition. It was organised and funded by the Talbot Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh and the Kunsthallen Brandts, Odense, Denmark, the exhibition is also travelling to Stavanger, Norway. This exhibition investigates and demonstrates the current interest within contemporary painting to reconsider themes such as fantasy, the figure, narrative and gender issues, and the transformation from child to adult. This exhibition takes an overview of work that explores an aspect of realism in painting that is comparable to today's computer role playing games and imagery in which the boundary line between reality and fiction has become difficult to define. There were 22 artists exhibiting in this show, co-exhibitors include Ida Applebroog, USA; Louise Bourgeois F/USA, Enrico David, I; Julie Nord, DK and Kiki Smith, USA. The painting 'Echoes in the Trees' was included in this exhibition. It is an exploration of a variety of art historical and contemporary languages of landscape painting. Within Kane's work, she explores what an ideal landscape painting might be by taking (visual) quotes from the history of art. This act of cultural cherry picking is a vehicle for questioning her interest in utopias which continues to be an ongoing theme within the history of painting. To accompany the exhibition, a 96 page, full colour catalogue was produced additionally funded by the Augustine Foundation, Billdekundstradet, the Scottish Arts Council, Kunstahallen Brandts and the Talbot Rice Gallery. It included essays by the authors and critics and Barry Schwabsky USA, Lisbeth Bonde DK and an additional text by the curators Lene Burkard, Pat Fisher and Karsten Ohrt. The exhbition was widely reviewed (see attached) and attended and was part of the Edinburgh Festival. RAE_import_type : Exhibition RAE_uoa_type : LICA
