Additional Information:
This book chapter is featured in a joint-authored book comprising invited chapters by internationally recognised authors in the field of sustainability and design, namely, Kate Fletcher, Alistair Fuad-Luke, Ezio Manzini and John Wood, with an introduction by John Thackara. This chapter further develops the work presented in the author's 2006 book 'Sustainable by Design: Explorations in Theory and Practice' published by Earthscan. It presents new theoretical ideas combined with several new conceptual designs that illustrate the ideas through tangible artefacts. This transformative step, from theory to built object is essential to the designing process and a highly original element in the author's research approach. The chapter addresses an important, but rarely discussed, aspect of design for sustainability ' that of moderating or reducing production and consumption by exploring ways of re-valuing older objects through their re-presentation via innovative, locally achievable design solutions. It also explores ways of achieving this while simultaneously adapting older products to be compatible with later technologies. This book chapter builds on and benefits from earlier explorations and presentations of these ideas at international peer-reviewed design conferences including the European Academy of Design Conference in Turkey, 2007, the Ravage the Planet Conference in Argentina, 2006, and the Industrial Designers Society of America Conference in Texas, 2006. This work was influential in leading to an invitation to deliver a keynote address, a PhD workshop and a Contemporary Issues lecture at Arizona State University, March 2007, and was a significant factor in an invitation to participate in a panel presentation and book signing at the international design event 100% Design, Earl's Court, London, October 2007.
