Additional Information:
Gere was co-curator (33%) - with Jemima Rellie of Tate and Christiane Paul of the Whitney Museum of American Art - of FEEDBACK, a major art exhibition in Northern Spain. The exhibition opened in March 2007 and was one of the inaugural events for the Laboral Centre for Art and Creative Industries in Gijon. As a curator he was responsible for devising the theme of the exhibition, selecting the artists to be exhibited, collaborating with architects and designers and putting together the catalogue, including writing essays, artists' biographies and entries about individual works of art. FEEDBACK focused on art responsive to instructions, input, or its environment and created one possible narrative of the multi-faceted histories of art that uses digital technologies as a medium. FEEDBACK interweaved two themes relating to responsive art. One theme traced the concept of feedback from art based on instructions'be they natural language or code'to art that sets up open systems reacting to input from its immediate environment or the Internet. A second theme explored the concept of light and the moving object and image from Kinetic Art and Op Art to responsive notions of television and cinema. FEEDBACK linked these themes in order to illuminate how different artistic practices developed over the past 50 years are interconnected and have informed each other. The exhibition was not a historical survey but featured a selection of pieces that underscore how related ideas have been expressed at different points in time. Artworks were not presented in chronological order but in thematic groups or pairs that branch and connect. Among the featured artists were Marcel Duchamp, L'szl' Moholy Nagy, Nam June Paik, Jean Tingueley, Takis, Sol Lewitt as well as a number of important contemporary artists working with new media.
