Special Individual Circumstances. Evans contributed 70% to this paper. Evans was an invited member of the 'Design, Emergence and Communication' network, funded by The Research Councils (RCUK) and coordinated by the University of Manchester. The research questions the role and relevance of emergence in design, specifically, in relation to product and industrial design. Design and emergence have not previously been explored in this context. Funded network meetings developed and explored ideas in relation to design and emergence. The authors developed a design and emergence framework that identified explicit phases in the design life cycle and their relationship to emergence. This paper considers how user adoption and design envisioning contribute to the recognition and interpretation of emergent properties within the design life cycle. The value to the designer of an enhanced awareness, and ultimately understanding of emergence and emergent properties is considered, and the way in which designers may engage with emergent properties discussed. Models of these engagements are presented. Organised by the University of Sydney, this international roundtable conference brought together some of the worlds foremost experts upon Computational and Cognitive Models of Creative Design. The conference considered progress made since the first conference in 1989. Papers were reviewed by an international panel of referees and appear in the published proceedings.
