Special Individual Circumstances. Inspiration to Order is one of the outcomes of the Visual Intelligences Research Project that Fortnum has led since 2004. Visual Intelligence is used here to investigate the way visual artists think and make and their relationship. Its overarching research question asks if documenting and evaluating artists' processes can demonstrate visual intelligence. It addresses one of the central aims of the project to set up ways to investigate, document and publish both artists' processes and outcomes and exhibited documentation made during an AHRC pilot study to test methodologies of documentation. As curator Fortnum worked with nine artists to record the making process and this documentation was exhibited alongside finished art works at California State University, Stanislaus' Gallery, the Winchester Gallery, Southampton University and Wimbledon College of Art Gallery, University of the Arts London. A context for discussion was provided by a 2 day symposium, Visual Intelligence and the Sense of Art, at Stanislaus where she gave a paper. She also took part in a gallery discussion at WSA and an Agendas event at WCA. The publication to accompany the show includes an edited version of her essay. Fortnum was invited to show the digital aspects of the exhibition at the Art Historian's Annual Conference in Ulster in April 2007. Other outcomes: symposium The Documentation of Fine Art Processes and Practices, Lancaster University (2005); symposium Did Hans Namuth kill Jackson Pollock?: The Problem of Documenting the Creative Process, Chelsea College of Art, London (2007); paper What is Visual Intelligence and How do artists use it?, UWE (2005), Hertfordshire University (2005), Royal College of Art (2005),The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006), Loyola University, New Orleans (2006), The Sense of Art International Conference, California State University Stanislas, (2006); Journal of Visual Art, guest editor (2007).
