This essay explores the idea of feminist performance as archive. It draws on Rebecca Schneider's argument which contests the dualistic thinking of the archive as permanent and performance as ephemeral, and her proposal that performance offers the possibility of remaining, but remaining differently. More specifically, the idea of remaining differently is taken up to show how this might be important to the notion of a feminist archive. It asks how feminist cultural activity can become and remain visible without getting caught in the western tradition of 'seeing' (of objectification); how might it be possible for performance to 'house' a culture resistant to and different from the dominant cultural order that would prefer to mark it absent rather than present? These questions are explored and addressed through a consideration of London-based performance artist Bobby Baker and her performances of 'Daily Life'. A draft of this essay was first presented at XIV World Congress of the International Federation for Theatre Research, Amsterdam, July 2002. It has been selected for inclusion in a Reader from the first ten years of Performance Research. Critical Decade: A Performance Research Reader will be published in the autumn of 2007 and Aston's essay will appear in the section 'Performance and Theory' introduced and selected by Professor David Williams. The article will also be anthologised in Bobby Baker: Redeeming Features of Daily Life, co-authored/edited by Bobby Baker and Michele Barrett, also due for publication autumn 2007 (Routledge).
