By its very subtitle, 'Poetry short, narrative and musical', this collection indicates its intention to mix very various poetic traditions. Indeed, much of the volume derives from practice-based research in live performance, and the integration of both words and music. Deploying authentic early music pieces, original narrative poems were written to evoke and examine a series of obscure historical curiosities. Of particular importance is the tension between censorship and artistic freedom within Jewish culture in seventeenth-century Mantua - a tension that is explored primarily through the figure of the Jewish composer and musician, Salamone Rossi. The production of self-standing poetry alongside live performance, deploying period music played on reproduction early instruments, extends the boundaries which demarcate different art forms (poetry and music), and different methods of distribution and consumption (publication and performance). The collection was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for 2006. RAE_import_type : Authored book RAE_uoa_type : English Language and Literature
