“over the past seven years, i’ve deliberately stepped beyond the familiar, relocating across countries and continents to challenge 20 years of experience in British design education. among other opportunities, i aimed to unsettle assumptions and immerse myself in unfamiliar contexts, exploring how culture, business, economics, environment, and values shape behaviour and beliefs. i wanted to test whether sustained uneasiness could serve as a catalyst for meaningful change in thinking, teaching, research, innovation, and design itself. Has the change been a formidable teacher? Yes. Has it been challenging? on many levels and more often than i’d generally care for. in a modest way, i hope it contributes to sustaining a thoughtful and focused commitment to contemporary design education leadership, rooted in integrity. this ongoing process of personal and professional learning has deeply shaped my role as Editor-in-Chief. i believe it has contributed to the development of the design Journal as it enters the second quarter of the twenty first century. alongside a new and expanding team of editors, we are dedicated to adapting and learning how best to serve the global design education community—its research, management, pedagogy, and leadership—as it moves towards new skills, knowledge, goals, and career pathways.
