Abstract

A new project aims to the exploitation of the W-band (92 - 114 GHz) by developing a novel and commercially attractive multibeam transmitter in the 102 - 109.5 GHz band with 7.5 GHz bandwidth, for high capacity transmission hubs, enabled by high power traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifiers. At sub-THz frequencies, the interaction impedance of a slow wave structure, the interaction structure in a TWT, tends to decrease with impact to the achievable output power. A novel topology of double corrugated waveguide, defined as Trapezoidal Bridged Double Corrugated Waveguide (TBDCW) that doubles the interaction impedance of a conventional DCW will be presented. A two-section interaction structure for a W-band TWT has been designed by using the TBDCW in the 102 - 109.5 GHz frequency band to provide about 30 W output power and more than 38 dB gain.
