Abstract

This paper analyses the memorialisation of the First World War in Lancaster, comparing the motivations and designs of memorials erected after the First World War with the monuments and activities marking its centenary. The analysis explores how the past, present and future are imagined and represented in this memorialisation. It exposes continuities and changes, and the emphases and omissions in the commemorative landscape that the centenary reproduced and began to address.
