This study qualitatively explores the role of cooperatives in assuring justice for farmers within the context of a popular voluntary sustainability standard, certifications. It adopts a multiple case research design within the context of global coffee supply chains where Brazilian producers engage in certifications through cooperatives. Data has been obtained through interviews with key stakeholders involved in certification processes. Preliminary findings revealed potential injustice challenges for small farmers in certification schemes and highlighted how cooperatives address these challenges to deliver a just supply chain that benefits farmers.
