Abstract

Les Revenants is an installation of waxed paper drawings and glacial flour made in response to archaeological objects emerging out of glacial ice in the Evolene municipality of Switzerland where the work was first exhibited. The title means ‘ghosts’ , literally translated in English ‘those that come back’. The work is a development of drawings made to respond to environmental conditions in post glacial sites. Les Revenants was made for the top floor of Maison Ribaupierre, a traditional Swiss house, built in 1548. The layered wax drawings are sensitive to their environment, changing with heat and light. Here, lit only by daylight through the attic windows, the images are illuminated and obscured by the movement of sunlight and clouds over the course of a day. Les Revenants was exhibited as part of the group exhibition Sonner le gla(s)cier , curated by Maeva Besse and Marta Spagnolello , produced by Le Cairn as part of the Switzerland -wide exhibition project Regarder le glacier s'en aller (Watching the Glacier Disappear) which took place across Switzerland summer 2024. Sonner Le Gla(s)cier is the group exhibition of outcomes of dialogue between seven artists and five scientists to share their approaches and ideas around the topic of glaciers, specifically, the challenges faced by the melting of glaciers in the Valais region of Switzerland. The exhibition was curated by Maéva Besse and Marta Spagnolello at the Maison des Alpes in Evolène. Participating artists are: Barbezat-Villetard, Sarah Casey, Frederic Fourdinier, Lionel Fournier, Basile Richon, Gabrille Rossier, Alexia Turlin. Participating scientists: Chloé Barboux, Jean Chamel, Pierre-Yves Nicod, Christophe Randin, Amadée Zyrd. The project is part of the national project Regarder le glacier s’en aller (Watching the Glacier Disappear) led by Bernard Fibicher, Carmen Perrin and Lorette Coen, sharing national and international creative works across multiple sites and venues in Switzerland in summer 2024.
