Abstract

We present an observation at LEP of the production of x mesons in the collisions of two quasi-real photons using the c2 q y OPAL detector. The x mesons are reconstructed in the decay channel x ™Jrc g™l l g Ž . with l s e,m using all c2 c2 data taken at eqey centre-of-mass energies of 91 and 183 GeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 167 and 55 y1 pb respectively. The two-photon width of the x is determined to be G xŽ . ™gg s1.76"0.47"0.37"0.15 keV, c2 c2 where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third comes from branching ratio uncertainties.
