Abstract

Spectral and directional analysis techniques are investigated, with particular reference to the measurement of shoreline wave fields. The directional energy densities have been determined using the direct Fourier transform and maximum Likelihood methods. The maximum likelihood method (MLM) has been shown to produce good estimates for a 4 sensor star array system by using synthetically generated data sets. However, the MLM was found to suffer from instability which was overcome by suitable modifications to the basic spectral analysis. It was also found that the results can be very sensitive to various controlling parameters, and a range of sensitivity tests was carried out resulting in a recommended set of analysis procedures.
