With the increasing importance and dominance of practice theory in organisation, management and marketing research, this paper sets out to review the different conceptualisations of practice that have been adopted or drawn upon in the management literature, show how these provide different insights into action, meaning and transformation and highlight the methodological implications for management researchers. We also consider how different methods of inquiry and specifically, the way researchers engage with the practices they study, inform and transform our understanding of practice. We conclude by discussing how management practice researchers can benefit from recognising, actively questioning and aligning their conception of practice and their engagement in the research process and suggest some ways in which this can be achieved.
