Research with the veteran population has demonstrated a number of highly relevant interpersonal issues that not only arise from trauma but can also impact upon an individual’s recovery from trauma. Despite this, little work has been done to consider such issues within the civilian population and still less has investigated the qualitative experience of living with trauma in a relational sense. The current study examines data collected from semistructured interviews with 4 couples using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: (a) losing the person you love; (b) isolating versus needing support; (c) the impact of posttraumatic stress disorder on relationship roles, responsibilities, and interactions; and (d) the dyadic nature of moving on from trauma. Clinical implications and future directions for research are discussed.
