Abstract

The article addresses - and aims to clarify - longstanding debates concerning historical developments in English kinship patterns. It highlights the importance of kinship from the early modern period to the present, while examining new ways of conceptualising kinship ties. It ends by identifying similarities between early modern kinship and household patterns, and household alignment typical of 'new families' today. This innovative analysis will be of use for both students and scholars in England and beyond.
