The common denominator that separates hate crimes from other crimes concerns the harms inflicted on targeted victims and society more broadly. While all crime hurts in one way or another, the very essence of a hate crime is that it hurts more than a parallel crime. The fact that hate crimes hurt has not been a matter of dispute. But the nature and extent of the hurts of hate crime have, to date, not been fully understood. And claims that hate crimes hurt more than parallel crimes have not been extensively evidenced. Consequently, this volume takes a major step forward in understanding the harms of hate crime by gathering much of the available evidence between its covers in a collection of chapters written by many of the influential authors on the topic.
