Early Career Researcher. G&T Swimmers was composed as one of 8 sonic 'viewpoints' in the BEAST Viewpoint installation commissioned by Aldeburgh Education for the Fringe 2001. The work is significant in its design as an independent fixed media piece and an open installation, and thus necessitated further development to the interaction of open-work and fixed concert aesthetic as was explored and researched in earlier works (e.g. in Soft Lies, Soft Icons, Kuollut Radio (trnsl. Dead Radio) and B-Side [accessible online]). The principle idea is to create piece(s) that can be looped, enabling the perceiver to enter the sonic landscape, or the unfolding stream of discourse at any given moment, without jeopardising the structural function of the set beginning and end points inherent in a fixed work. In an open context, replay of the material will cause the fixed null points to shift, allowing for a dynamic appreciation of form through the many rhizomatic connections of the unfolding sonic discourse. G&T Swimmers should also be heard as a sonic meditation on the political, corporeal and emotional state of a nation, an aural viewpoint to (British) culture, thus extending the critical sonic commentary and acousmatic essay work begun with Kuollut Radio in 1998. The work marks the beginning of two areas that are explored further in Portrait Concr'te (item 4): (i) singular continua, a new compositional process and conceptual framework in my praxis across micro, mesa and macro levels, and (ii) the idea of sonic portray and portrayal. Released on Viewpoint 'Works from BEAST ' vol.3'. London: Sargasso Records (SCD28407), 2003. Installations at CBSO-Center, Birmingham, 2002 and Fringe: Aldeburgh Festival, Aldeburgh Beach, 2001. Broadcast as part of Viewpoints by Deutschlandradio's 'Studio f'r akustische Kunst' in September 2002, Berlin, Germany. RAE_import_type : Composition RAE_uoa_type : LICA
