Early Career Research and Special Individual Circumstances. These two solo exhibitions provide large scale immersive environments involving 'virtual' performers in a ubiquitous networked space consisting of costume, glass sculpture, photography, and networked digital interactives. It involved investigation of developments in technology and network code. The exhibitions contribute to critical discussion concerning uses of conventional media within a new context provided by installation and digital media; the interactive elements exploring how spaces are negotiated by the spectator within public and private domains. A catalogue published alongside the exhibition included critical writing on Newall's works by Megan Dunn (MA East Anglia creative writing Norwich UK), Maria Walls (Visual Arts Lecturer Massey University NZ) and Leon Tan (Psychotherapy Lecturer AUT Auckland NZ, Lacanian Analyst). Sic Games 1 was reviewed in Christchurch Press (the main Christchurch newspaper), February 12, 2005; and in Art Bash, on-line magazine, December 2005. Megan Dunn's interview of Newall in relation to her art practice, was published in Natural Selection issue 4, 2005. The magazine was selected by the curatorial team to be part of Documenta, Kassel, Germany 2007. The work was also reviewed in on-line International Contemporary Art Magazine; and in the University of Canterbury Communication and Development magazine 3rd February 2005; an article was published by Canterbury University Press in The Chronicle vol 40 no 2, February 17th 2005; and in The Aida List, an on-line forum for discussions of the digital arts. Sic Games 2 was reviewed in Listener, art section page 46, April 16-22 2005. The work was commissioned from the Creative New Zealand New Work fund (one of two individual artists nationally in 2004 to receive this fund in the Multi Disciplinary category) and received support from Magnum Mac Apple Computers, from Christchurch Design Company Dux Deluxe, and from Canterbury University (Christchurch, NZ).
