Special Individual Circumstances. In 2002, Kane was awarded a 6-month research residency from Pepinieres Europeenes Pour Jeunes Artists, France. For this residency, she based herself in Mons in Belgium where she worked alongside the Ville de Mons Service de Culture and ESAPV (Ecole Superieure des Arts Plastiques et Visuels). This residency was also financed and supported in the UK by Arts Council England. Whilst in Belgium, Kane set out to make a body of work that reflected upon the contemporary post-industrial Belgian landscape. Kane was particularly interested in the work of the Flemish primitives and Brueghel, all of which are well represented in Belgium's museums. On completion of this residency, Kane had a solo exhibition at the Musee des Beaux Arts de Mons. In this exhibition, she presented work spanning three years based on the theme of the landscape and still life paintings. To accompany this exhibition, a 48-page full colour catalogue entitled 'Paula Kane' was made with the support of the Fine Art publishers La Lettre Volee in Brussels. This book is a retrospective account of the work from 1998-2003. Included are two essays, the first from the writer, critic and artist Edwina Ashton and another from the writer and classicist, Dr Tim Saunders with text in both English and French. The catalogue was funded by a number of European partners totalling over 9,000 euros. To celebrate the residencies, a catalogue was made 'Artists' Experiences', 176 pages in full colour (ISNB 2914479018) which gives a comprehensive overview of the variety of artists and their experiences who were awarded residencies. Later that year, Arts Council England used an image of the painting 'Various Things' as the front cover of their publication 'International Policy' (0728711095) RAE_import_type : Exhibition RAE_uoa_type : LICA
