Abstract

MILAN DISTRICT OF DESIGN A system of places, actors and relations at the service of innovation Edited by Paola Bertola, Daniela Sangiorgi, Giuliano Simonelli This book presents the results of a part of the 'Italian Design System' national research (co-funded by the Ministry of University and Research) investigating the Milanese design district. It explores the universe of professionals, services, places and events that gave birth to that collective design laboratory which is Milan, a city continuously producing and experimenting cultural and production innovations; design related activities and actors, exchange, ideation, production and visibility places, and also design organisations and schools are here mapped, analysed and interpreted in a systemic way. The book reports the numeric evidence of a well-known phenomenon, Milan as one of the main world design capitals, and shows the system of relations that bind the main actors of its community (schools, editors, studios, exhibitions, associations, showrooms, etc.) to each other. Based on these quantitative and qualitative data, the book provides also some authorial interpretations of the Milanese model drawing unusual perspectives on the phenomenon. The richness of point of views presented in this book shows the potentialities of the Milanese Design System as a 'symbolic theatre' for Made in Italy and as a design district able to orient other emerging local systems diffused at a national level.

Early Career Researcher. One of the three main publication outputs of the first Italian national research on design co-funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR): it addresses the role of industrial design for product innovation and the development of the design resources for the Italian System between local and global resources. This research has been the first formal research investigating the nature and organisation of the Italian Design System and it was awarded with the Compasso d'Oro, the most famous Italian Design Award managed by ADI (the Italian industrial design organisation). The publication, focused on the specific Milanese Design System, was based on quantitative (relational database) and qualitative (interview) research, mapping the main design actors (schools, editors, studios, exhibitions, associations, showrooms, etc.) and evaluating their interconnections in the 'industrial district' territorial model. Sangiorgi contributed to the building of the relational database, the development of the qualitative interviews and coordination of the interpretative framework. Furthermore Sangiorgi wrote two chapters in the book: 'Mostrare il design: fiere e luoghi della visibilit'' (Exhibiting design: fairs and showrooms) of 14 pages and 'Metodologia di ricerca e data base' (Research methodology and database) of 38 pages. The relational database, methodology and concept have subsequently been adopted and updated by the Design Focus Agency (www.designfocus.it) of Politecnico di Milano, within which Sangiorgi was working until April 2007, resulting in the publication of the 'DesignDirectory' of the Lombardy design system book and website and with the exhibition 'Milanomadeindesign', promoted by the Province of Milan and the Chamber of Commerce of Milan in collaboration with the Region of Lombardy, held in New York, Toronto, Milan and Tokyo.
