Early Career Researcher. A collaborative (50%) 3-year project on mobile media and surveillance, where Hemment worked solo for the first 18 months, and for the second 18 months together with three other researchers on developing an installation, in which Hemment was primarily concerned with artistic development, with a smaller input into software development and interaction design. Funded by '131,000 AHRC Research Fellowship plus '24,990 from ACE and other grants. In all of these Hemment was the sole applicant. It examined ethical questions raised by locative media, and looked at vernacular applications of mobile technology. The installation premiered at ISEA2006/ZeroOne San Jose, combining art installation, pervasive design, software engineering, activism, hardware hacking, SMS poetry, sticker art and ambient performance. Deploying an experimental 'node network' covering downtown San Jose for 7 days, it tracked and engaged with 2,500 people more than 500,000 times. ISEA2006's Director stated: ""In the inverted logic of the post-Orwellian city, Loca agents, software and human, decrypt the hertzian passages of its own inhabitants. For better or for worse?"" (statement published in the project film). And wrote in the formal letter of invitation: ""Your piece, Loca, is a significant project that displays great clarity as well as originality, and will help make this a very exciting and memorable Festival."" Chosen as the lead feature in NBC television's ISEA2006 coverage, and characterised in a New York Times feature as: ""a policy- minded research effort with the art serving as its public face"". Presented in online gallery curated by Paterson (Finland), Wan (Hong Kong) and Hur (Korea) for Leonardo Electronic Almanac. Proof-of-concept installation presented at PixelACHE, Kiasma, Helsinki (2005) and RCA, London (2005). Artist statement published in J.
