Additional Information:
Gere was co-editor (50%) of a special issue of the journal: Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C: Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, from Cambridge University, dedicated to the topic of the brain in a vat. His aim was to use the opportunity of an offer to guest edit an issue to collate a genuinely interdisciplinary collection of essays, looking at one of the most culturally rich and intriguing tropes in contemporary culture. To this end he brought together philosophers, scientists, historians of science, cultural theorists and artists, all addressing the question of the brain in a vat, whether as a philosophical thought experiment, a scientific object, a topic in science fiction or an inspiration for artistic practice. As well as being co-editor (with specific responsibility for the more cultural and, for the journal in question, unconventional papers) he also contributed an essay, 'Brains-in-vats, giant brains and world brains: the brain as metaphor in digital culture' and an interview with the artist Rod Dickinson, 'The technologies and politics of delusion: an interview with artist Rod Dickinson', which has since been republished in an expanded version in From Studio to Situation, edited by Clare Doherty, an important anthology of essays about new modes and locations of artistic practice.
