Invited keynote paper for the special issue on Socially Responsible Design. This paper draws on over eight years of funded research including Design against Crime (Design Council/Home Office/EU) and Design in Government Departments (Design Council), to build up a model for socially responsible design. A theoretical connection between corporate social responsibility and design is made and research exemplars used to argue the case for design to take a leading role in social responsibility. It is a basis for a five-volume book series (Editor: Cooper) published by Ashgate (Design for Inclusivity, Coleman et al 2007; Design for Sustainability, Bhamra et al 2007; Design for Health, Rust, 2007; Un-attainable Utopias, Wood, 2007; Design against Crime, Davey et al, 2008). The work and the paper contributed to keynote addresses: FutureDesignDays, Stockholm : Design Against Crime, November 2004, and the development of the Design against Crime Solutions Centre between Greater Manchester Police and Salford University, and funding for three EU FP6 projects.
