Additional Information:
This book is an equally co-authored book resulting from four years of research and theoretical development based on the authors' combined generic research and experience (over 12 EPSRC and Design Council funded projects to the value of '1.4m). It uses the research and other evidence to illustrate the role of the designer in the late 20th century and forecast new roles based on trend evidence of the role of the designer in the 21st century. The originality lies in the proposed new role for the designer as illustrated in the model developed throughout the book, as it identifies the designer as a maker, but also as someone who makes meaning possible, and as such, a maker of culture. A combination then of craft-maker, cultural intermediary and opportunistic entrepreneur, the designer has a fluid, yet pivotal role in contemporary society, contributing significantly to our individual experience and wellbeing in the material world. The work is significant in that it builds on the work of the authors' previous book 'The Design Agenda' (1995 Wiley and Sons) which sold over 12,000 copies over ten years. This publication was also influential in Cooper's contribution to the development of the AHRC/EPSRC funded programme 'Designing for the 21st Century' and was used as a basis for the keynote address at the launch of the programme in March 2004. It was also influential in invitations to give keynote speeches, in particular: Dutch Design Council Annual Conference, June 2003, Portuguese Design Council International Conference, March 2003, EPSRC Annual Conference, April 2003, and a keynote address at the D2B - The 1st International Design Management Symposium: Shanghai 2006. the latter resulting in further consultancy advice for the Society of Organic Chemicals Association on 'Innovation and New Product Development', February 2004.
