Stewart edited 50% of this volume, contributed one chapter, and developed the index. He also wrote 70% of the extended introduction which provides, for the first time, an overview of performance work and scholarship that explores the borderland between ecology and the arts, one of the most important themes to have emerged in recent years. This introduction identifies very different understandings of the relationship between the performing arts and nature, from practitioners and theorists who see 'nature' as no more than a product of culture; to others who grasp it as an independent domain, and those who see performance as a process of exchange between the human and the other-than-human. The chapters in the book were structured by Stewart to reflect those differences. The first part emphasizes psychoanalytical and cultural materialist understandings of nature; the second part, social philosophy; the third, radical theories of urban and virtual space and time, or else phenomenology; and the fourth, an existential ontology in which nature has the capacity to perform itself. Many of the chapters are case studies and the book as a whole reflects a comprehensive range of forms through which nature has been explored, including not just dance, theatre and film productions, and architecture, photography and sculpture, but also acoustic ecology, animal behaviour, family therapy, political protest, religious ritual, and social practice art. Stewart's chapter, which analyzes his own kinaesthetic experience of environmental phenomena according to Husserlian phenomenology and Heideggerian ontology, is in part four.
