J'rs-Munby's introduction to and translation of this 214 page book by Lehmann provides significant historical, institutional and theoretical contexts with reference to European, American and Australian scholarship and performance practice. She was responsible for the translation of critical vocabulary, including theoretical/philosophical terminology (Hegel, Aristotle) with established translation practices; the task was to produce a coherent and readable rendition of the author's theoretical argument and 'voice' in English; and location of existing English translations/originals for all quoted material. In collaboration with the author, J'rs-Munby was instrumental in the editing/adaptation of this book for the Anglophone readership, including the choice of performance examples and updating of critical references. Reviews have commended the 'highly readable and scrupulously accurate translation' and the 'clear and helpful introduction placing the work in its broader aesthetic and theoretical context' (Marvin Carlson, review in Theatre Research International, Vol. 31, Issue 03, October 2006, p. 315-16). The book was also favourably reviewed by Joe Kelleher in Contemporary Theatre Review and Denise Varney in Performance Paradigm. This is a translation of a book that 'since its publication in Germany in 1999 ['] has become a standard reference for contemporary German theatre theory', the concept of postdramatic theatre having 'moved to a central position there and indeed in much current continental theory' (Carlson, ibid). Carlson concludes that 'this is a provocative, illuminating and stimulating book that will undoubtedly become as essential a text in English theatre scholarship as it already has in continental Europe'.
