Following Rohkrämer's invited participation in an international conference series on the concept of total war (5 conferences in total over ten years), he was asked to write this chapter for the edited collection emerging from the conference. The conferences were the first systematically to discuss the usefulness of the concept of total war by looking at the American civil war and the German wars of unification, the origins of the First World War, the First World War, the interwar period and the Second World War.
