Additional Information:
Sir Henry Irving: a Victorian Actor and his World (2005), which was the first study of the cultural significance of the great Victorian actor-manager, was short-listed for the Theatre Book of the Year Award. It was selected as their book of the year by Sir Michael Holroyd in The New Statesman (28 November 2005) ('a richly detailed and informative study') and Professor Jonathan Bate in The Sunday Telegraph (4 December 2005) ('In a bumper year for Shakespeare-related books, I was most impressed by Jeffrey Richards' definitive centenary biography of his most lauded interpreter'.) Paul Bailey in The Sunday Times said: 'Richards' Sir Henry Irving is a monumental work and must stand as absolutely the last word on the subject'. Professor Michael Booth in Theatre Notebook said: 'This book will surely stand as by far the most significant contribution to Irving studies of that (centenary) year, indeed for many a year, and of lasting value to scholars and devotees alike'.
