Critical reception of this work is now under way: one lengthy review, from the United States, comments, 'Anyone working on English Catholics in the long eighteenth century will be delighted with this carefully edited 6-volume facsimile reprint of English Catholic literature. Its appearance makes a major advance in identifying and understanding the complex nature of English Catholicism after the age of persecution (1559-1685) but before Catholic Emancipation in 1829. For further information on this publication, go to http://www.pickeringchatto.com/index.php/pc_site/major_works/english_catholicism_1680_1830 . The specific approach taken in these long-standing Pickering & Chatto scholarly ventures is for the editor to provide biographical and bibliographical introductions ('headnotes') ahead of, and explanatory annotations following, carefully reproduced original texts, along with an over-arching introduction to the selected works and full bibliographical guidance; the publishers supply the general index. For purposes of RAE appraisal, and given the sheer bulk of this collection totalling over 2000 pages, it seems sensible to provide the actual scholarly material contributed by the editor, without reproducing in full the texts on which the various commentaries are made, though giving the title or initial pages of the original works in question in order to indicate the type and spread of those identified for inclusion within the set.
