This essay surveys the experiences and attitudes of friars engaged on pilgrimage or in missionary work in the eastern Mediterranean. Besides bringing to attention a corpus of little-known pilgrimage accounts from after the crusading period, the essay contributes to debates about cultural interaction in the region by examining mendicant pilgrims' attitudes to indigenous Christians.
