Additional Information:
This book is the culmination of a long-term project on the cultural history and theory of the concepts of addiction and of modernity. At the time of this submission, the book was too new to have generated any substantial reviews, but the University of Florida historian Joseph Spillane'who is widely published and is the leading historical expert on anti-cocaine policy'wrote in his review of Hickman's manuscript that 'Hickman is fully engaged with the existing historical record in a way that anyone who knows the territory would be pleased with ' [He] gets more out of his sources than anyone else in the field. His reading of DeQuincey and Ludlow is the best I've seen in print' he treats his sources as entirely fresh'most historians already think they know what they'll find, but Hickman dives in and comes up with nice bits no one knew were there!
