The screenplay Frozen was co-written by Steel with Juliet McKoen and seeks to explore both the nature of grief and the possibility of locating liminal spheres within or at the borders of the seemingly materialist world of the twenty-first century. Important in this respect is Frozen's experimental way with narrative as classical myth is spliced with modern-day technology and surrealism with realism. This intertextuality is reinforced by the way in which the text, although obviously cinematic, is at times conspicuously literary in mood and tone. This relates to the way in which the audience is left to decide whether they are watching a psychological thriller, a murder mystery or ghost story. It should be added that Frozen's significance arises partly from the location: Morcambe Bay. The screenplay is, therefore, informed by extensive research, including field trips and taped interviews with local people. The film has been screened at the London Film Festival (2005) as well as going on general release both nationally and internationally. It has won over eleven awards, including: Special Jury Mention - Britspotting, Berlin (2005), BBC Audience Award and Best Feature - Commonwealth Film Festival (2005), and Best Feature Film - Dubrovnik Film Festival (2005).
