The field of this paper is higher education and is a longitudinal study of participation in higher education (HE). It argues that net of attainment, ethnicity, housing tenure and region significantly affect young people's entry to HE. Family wealth (indirectly measured through housing tenure) is implicated in entry to HE. Parental education is also important and pupils with graduate parents are more likely to participate in degree-level HE. The report documents important results directly related to two issues highlighted in the White Paper The Future of Higher Education: the expansion of HE and increasing participation, and fair access. Building on an already successful collaboration between a sociologist and social statisticians, it uses rigorous analysis of an existing large-scale data source. The data set was the YCS Cohort 9.
