Carbon Zero Ltd has developed novel energy storage systems that store energy as heat by the use of various designs of zeolite molecular sieve energy cells operating under low pressures. Its initial application is to store off peak electricity in a form that can be outputted during the day as central heating and hot water. Whilst this approach competes against gas boiler a theoretical application exists to charge the system using heat from solar hot water panels. Carbon Zero claimed that the temperature output from zeolite cells can be at a high grade of 150ºC and believed that the heat output can be converted into electricity using a Rankine cycle connected to a scroll expander to generate rotational movement. Lancaster University has been appointed by Carbon Zero to undertake this innovation project to review the methods of generating both heat and electrical power based on Rankine cycle systems using scroll expanders. This report presents the findings in this project.
