Abstract

The thermal conductivity of MgO crystals with additions of Fe, Ni, Co and Cr has been measured as a function of magnetic field. These all show a minimum in the conductivity at fields where the splitting of the ground state levels is of the order of kT. In very high fields, for Fe in MgO, the thermal conductivity is higher than in zero field. This is due to zero field splitting of the levels.
