Abstract

We have measured the temperature dependence of the vortex nucleation rate due to negative ions in isotopically pure superfluid 4He. We conclude that nucleation proceeds via two independent mechanisms: a temperature-independent "intrinsic" mechanism; and a roton-driven mechanism, dominant above 0.6 K.
