This chapter addresses issues of creativity and identity in academic writing. It links with some key themes in Roz Ivanic's work including notions of audience, purpose and the struggles with identity experienced by both new and established academic writers. We begin by outlining some of the features of academic writing processes. We then move on to discuss barriers to and possibilities for genre change in response to forces both inside and outside of the academy.
