Abstract

This article presents non-government initiatives in addressing issues of nutrition rights. It argues that there is an urgent need for the non-governmental community to concentrate on the promotion of economic, social and cultural rights and uses the experience of Food First Information and Action Network (FIAN) in the promotion of nutrition rights as an example of how this can be done. The article also identifies a number of community-based, local and national NGOs that are involved in the struggle for the improvement of nutritional standards and access to food security and how these are important in the human rights struggle. The article discusses how international NGOs can and do support the work of the United Nations in its efforts to improve the respect for economic, social and cultural rights and, finally, dwells on the future role of international NGOs in this field.
