Abstract

University teaching staff are currently at the forefront of challenges related to generative AI in teaching, learning, and assessment. Across the sector, practices vary widely, from structured policies to informal experimentation, creating inconsistency and uncertainty. In response, an interdisciplinary AI Summit funded by the DSAIL was held at Lancaster University on 9th June 2026, bringing together 40 colleagues across faculties. The aim was to share practice, identify risks, and explore how higher education must evolve in an AI enabled environment. A central conclusion emerged: the challenge is not simply adopting AI, but redefining what it means to learn, think, and demonstrate capability in an AI mediated world. Lancaster University must continue to adapt to produce AI-augmented, not AI-dependent graduates, under the tutelage of AI literate staff. This report is a summary of the summit learnings and recommendations shared to key decision makers at Lancaster University.
