Abstract
A group of 5 drawing glacial four on glass lenses using light and shadow. Selected through peer review for exhibition in Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2025, regarded as the foremost annual open exhibition dedicated to drawing in the UK. This was one of 82 drawings by 76 artists were shortlisted through peer reviewed international open competition. Each of the tiny 4x4 cm drawings with glacial flour on glass lens depicts a (post) glacial site in Switzerland, where the images and sediment were gathered during fieldwork supported by Creative Scotland and the Cantonal Museums of Valais 2023-24. Each drawing acts like stencil for light, casting a shadowy image of a glacial landscape witnessed, already a view already a view from the past. The tiny shadowy image recalls the absence of the retreated ice retreated but also the flimsiness of the aesthetic ideals associated with grand mountain vistas. The diminutive scale and focus on the sediments that appear presents an alternative to contemporary sublime aesthetics engaging catastrophe and spectacle to approach climate emergency.
