Abstract

The peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a classical paramyxovirus, consisting of 15,948 nucleotides which encodes 6 structural and at least 2 nonstructural genes. Owing to existing reverse genetics, a great deal of information has been gathered in understanding genomics and genetics of the PPRV. These tools and reports of PPR in resourceful countries have significantly advanced our understanding of the virus’s genetic makeup, replication cycle, pathogenesis, and the interactions between the virus and the host immune response. This chapter provides critical analysis of existing knowledge on the biology of PPRV and interaction of the virus with host which has not only helped devising better control strategies but has also facilitated understanding virus behavior in the diverse and emerging hosts.
