Abstract

The chapter reviews the themes covered throughout the book and provides an outlook as to how to move forward. Evidence of a causal link between hearing loss and dementia is currently inconclusive. Nonetheless, we stress that this lack of conclusive evidence should not undermine the utility of hearing aids, which are essential for effective communication, social engagement, and quality of life. The concept of age-related hearing loss is also called into question in this chapter, and we suggest that hearing loss in later life might not reflect the aging process per se, but is instead potentially reflective of an accumulation of lifestyle, health, and environmental factors. Focus should be on preventing hearing loss and maintaining good hearing health throughout life. We suggest that good hearing health may also be a potential cornerstone to building cognitive reserve. To support hearing health and brain health, increasing awareness in the public, policymakers, funders, and medical professionals of the importance of hearing will be paramount.
